Rethink bonding with Avery Dennison pressure-sensitive adhesives

Pressure-sensitive adhesives deliver fast, reliable bonding without heat or solvents. Suited for high-speed manufacturing across industries like automotive, electronics, and building and construction, these adhesive solutions support efficient, scalable industrial production.

At Avery Dennison, we specialize in developing pressure-sensitive adhesive solutions that empower engineers, designers, and converters to achieve more, whether it's simplifying processes, maximizing product performance, or meeting demanding environmental conditions.

What are pressure-sensitive adhesives?

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (commonly referred to as PSAs) are a class of adhesives that form a bond when light pressure is applied. No water. No heat. No drying or curing time. Their unique ability to adhere instantly to a wide range of substrates makes them essential across countless industrial applications.

These adhesives are engineered to perform under pressure, literally and figuratively. Designed for reliability, they bond effectively to materials like plastics, metals, textiles, and foams, while withstanding exposure to moisture, UV light, extreme temperatures, and vibration.

Why choose pressure-sensitive adhesive technologies?

  • No mechanical fasteners or heat required
  • Improved manufacturing throughput
  • Lightweight, flexible design options
  • Cleaner aesthetics with no surface damage
  • Compatibility with automated assembly
  • Reduced material waste and rework

These advantages make pressure-sensitive adhesives a preferred choice for manufacturers looking to simplify assembly, improve product performance, and support scalable production across multiple industries.

Common applications

You'll find our pressure-sensitive adhesives at work in industries where durability, speed, and consistency are critical. Our adhesives support a wide range of specific use cases:

  • Display and control panel mounting
  • Printed circuit board (PCB) bonding
  • Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) damping
  • Attachment of gaskets and EPDM seals
  • Thermal management in batteries, appliances, and electronics
  • Buzz, squeak, and rattle (BSR) mitigation in automotive interiors

How to choose the right pressure-sensitive adhesive?

Selecting the right pressure-sensitive adhesive depends on factors such as substrate type, surface energy, environmental exposure, and performance requirements. Rubber, acrylic, silicone, and differential adhesive systems each offer distinct advantages depending on the application. Avery Dennison supports adhesive selection through proven PSA technologies designed for a wide range of industrial bonding needs.

Types of pressure-sensitive adhesives

Avery Dennison offers a wide range of PSA technologies to support different substrates, performance expectations, and application environments. Each adhesive category is developed to address specific bonding challenges, from low surface energy plastics and foams to high-temperature and chemically demanding conditions.

General purpose rubber

An economical rubber-based adhesive suited for laminating polyester urethane and skinned foams. Bonds well to HDPE, LDPE, and other low surface energy substrates. Typical applications include foam bonding (PE, polyester urethane, EPDM, nitrile vinyl, PORON®), shoddy, and security labels. Max service temperature: 160°F (70°C).

High shear general purpose rubber

A high shear rubber adhesive that bonds to a wide variety of substrates. Not recommended for foam bonding. Bonds well to HDPE, LDPE, and other low surface energy substrates. Typical applications include hang tabs, security labels, plastics, and point-of-purchase displays. Max service temperature: 175°F (80°C).

Emulsion acrylic

An economical emulsion acrylic adhesive ideal for bonding polyester urethane and skinned foams. Typical applications include seat heating, foam bonding (PE, polyether, and polyester urethane), speaker grills, flooring, and vinyl. Max service temperature: 250°F (120°C).

High performance low VOC acrylic

A high performance, low VOC acrylic adhesive designed for bonding polyester urethane, polyether urethane, and skinned foams. Meets most automotive OEM requirements. Typical applications include automotive interiors (door pillar cloth, carpet fixation, insulation, arm rests), foam bonding (PE, polyether, and polyester urethane), and interior NVH. Max service temperature: 350°F (175°C).

General purpose acrylic

A general purpose acrylic adhesive with high initial tack, ideal for bonding polyester urethane and skinned foams. Typical applications include foam bonding (PE, polyether, and polyester urethane), heat shields, UHMWPE, and thermal insulation. Max service temperature: 350°F (175°C).

LSE modified acrylic

An LSE modified acrylic adhesive offering extremely high adhesion to textured and low surface energy substrates, with excellent environmental resistance. Typical applications include heat shielding, painted metal, acoustical absorption, and UHMW. Max service temperature: 350°F (175°C).

Pure acrylic

A plasticizer-resistant acrylic adhesive suitable for materials like vinyl (PVC), polyester, and ether urethane, engineered plastics, and metals. Not recommended for LSE bonding. Typical applications include foam bonding polyether and polyester urethane (best in class bonding to PORON-like materials), EPDM, PVC, leather/alcantara bonding, and vinyl helmet decals. Max service temperature: 250°F (120°C).

High shear acrylic

A high shear acrylic adhesive for medium and high surface energy materials where shear resistance is a priority. Bonds well to glass, ceramic, and polyether urethane foam. Typical applications include polyether urethane foam bonding, mirror bonding, and ABS automotive parts. Max service temperature: 350°F (175°C).

High performance acrylic (HPA™)

A high performance acrylic adhesive with high holding power under stress and load. Resistant to chemicals and extreme temperatures. Typical applications include graphic attachment, nameplates/dome labels, membrane switches, electrical shields, polycarbonate, and veneers. Max service temperature: 400°F (205°C).

Silicone

A silicone adhesive used on FT 9302 SF for extra low surface energy bonding. Ideal for silicone-based or Teflon™ (PTFE) substrates. Typical applications include silicone rubber gasketing and Teflon™ film lamination. Max service temperature: 400°F (205°C).

Removable acrylic

A removable adhesive system for applications where clean removal is required. Used in differential adhesive constructions that combine removable acrylics with permanent adhesive systems for specific bonding needs.
