News release: Avery Dennison Performance Tapes expands automotive offering with electric vehicle battery portfolio

Acrylic- and silicone-based flame-retardant adhesives meet UL® 94 V-0 requirements for enhanced fire safety.

PAINESVILLE, OHIO (February 23, 2021) – Avery Dennison Performance Tapes today announced it has expanded its automotive offering with a portfolio of adhesive solutions for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The EV battery portfolio offers bonding solutions coupled with functional properties, such as flame retardance and dielectric strength. These solutions can be used for a variety of applications, including: thermal runaway protection, cell to cell bonding and compression pads. The new portfolio enables EV battery and component manufacturers to tailor adhesives to the application, while eliminating the cure times and equipment required with liquid adhesives.

“EV batteries are one of the fastest growing segments of the automotive industry, and component manufacturers need bonding solutions that meet their high-performance requirements while streamlining production,” said Michael VanHaerents, automotive business development manager at Avery Dennison Performance Tapes. “We’re pleased to build upon our experience serving the automotive industry and expertise engineering flame-retardant adhesives with the launch of this new portfolio.”

The EV battery portfolio includes single-coated, double-coated and transfer tape constructions with a variety of liner options. A range of adhesive chemistries, including acrylic, silicone and rubber, allow manufacturers to match adhesion, shear, and environmental resistance to battery pack specifications.

Flame-retardant adhesives included in the portfolio are engineered to bond with and facilitate composites and materials to meet UL® 94 V-0 and other flame-retardant requirements.  In addition to bonding, these single-coated and double-coated constructions, feature conductive and nonconductive properties that provide manufacturers with new solutions for reducing vibration degradation of materials, reflecting radiant heat and flame-energy mitigation.

The EV battery portfolio builds on Avery Dennison’s extensive experience serving the automotive industry. The Avery Dennison Performance Tapes automotive offering supports more than 25 vehicle applications, such as badging, brake shims, fluid management, heat shields, weather seals, molding, and noise and vibration management. Products in the offering meet more than 2,400 active OEM certifications and are supported by UL® certified, ISO 17025 laboratories that provide fast-track testing against manufacturer specifications.
