News release: Avery Dennison Performance Tapes enhances EV battery portfolio with new technology expansion

PAINESVILLE, OHIO (September 13, 2022) – Avery Dennison Performance Tapes today announced updates to its electric vehicle (EV) battery portfolio for OEMs and suppliers. The enhanced portfolio builds on Avery Dennison’s pressure-sensitive adhesive tape technologies that address reducing flammability, boosting dielectric strength, and optimizing design and assembly. This next generation portfolio includes a new conformable dielectric tape that betters the electrical insulation in EV battery packs, and the addition of a rubber adhesive technology to its Flame Tough™ platform of flame-retardant adhesives.

Conformable Dielectric Tape
The electrical insulation of EV batteries can be improved utilizing this new conformable dielectric tape, a single-sided construction with improved stretching properties that allows it to bond better to contoured and raised surfaces. This dielectric material uniformly maintains its thickness and the polyurethane facestock prevents electrical arcing, which can lead to shorting and fires in the battery pack. The single-coated tape design is durable and creates an instant bond, eliminating the need for cure or dry times.

Flame Tough™ Rubber Adhesive
Flame Tough™ Rubber is the latest addition to Avery Dennison Performance Tapes’ Flame Tough™ adhesive platform. This rubber adhesive features flame-retardant properties that enable it and composites to pass various flammability requirements, such as UL®94VTM and UL®94, that are common for EV battery pack applications. The adhesive is halogen-free and has higher tack and adhesion than the portfolio’s acrylic and silicone Flame Tough™ adhesives. Flame Tough™ Rubber will be available in transfer tape and double coated tape constructions. It is recommended for thermal runaway barrier, compression pad and electrical insulation applications.

“As the electric vehicle industry progresses, we will continue to address the challenges that the value chain faces,” said Scott Krusinski, product manager - automotive & other transportation at Avery Dennison Performance Tapes. “These enhanced products answer two primary issues, flammability and electrical insulation.”
